Car Battery Wear

Your battery will wear as time passes, and a variety of other factors will affect the lifespan of your battery. Driving habits, how often you start your vehicle, lifestyle demands, and climate conditions are the most common reasons your battery wears. Factors you can control that lead to battery wear include leaving your headlights on, neglecting to turn off interior lights, and frequent short drives.

To avoid an unexpected dead battery, we suggest testing your Mazda’s battery twice a year. While you’re completing battery tests at home, you should also check for corrosion, and ensure the connections are clean. If you’d prefer to bring your Mazda in, Groove Mazda would be happy to inspect your battery at our Service Center.

Car Battery Wear Causes

Car batteries will deteriorate for a variety of reasons. Understanding why batteries wear will help you to improve their lifespan. The most common reasons batteries deteriorate are:

  • Time: Nothing lasts forever, as the battery in your Mazda ages its ability to recharge and perform will begin to deteriorate.
  • Weather: Frigid cold temperatures cause batteries to lose their charge, and extremely hot temperatures cause the liquid within batteries to evaporate.
  • Road Conditions: Rough road conditions such as potholes, and off-roading loosen your battery’s hold-down clamps, this leads the internal battery parts to break down faster.
  • Jump Starting: Jump-starting your vehicle will result in a shortened lifespan.

How to Test a Car Battery

When you bring your vehicle in for regular maintenance, Groove Mazda’s service technicians will test your battery. However, if you service your vehicle less than twice a year, we suggest bringing your Mazda in, or checking the battery at home by following the steps below:

  • Start your Mazda’s engine, turn on the headlights, and ensure your car is in park.
  • Press the gas, and look at the brightness of the headlights, examine any changes.
  • If your headlights become brighter as you press the gas pedal, the battery current is not strong enough to support the engine at idling and light levels.
  • If the headlights are brightening, we suggest you bring your Mazda to the Groove Mazda Service Center for a battery assessment.
